Twin Size Floating Bed Frame
Welcome back. This is the fourth version of the very popular floating bed frame that was originally posted here in October of 2019. This is the Twin Size. In this video, I'll give you a tip to save some money, a tip for incredibly velvety smooth frame boards, and I'll provide the measurements needed to copy this build. I'm including imperial and metric measurements side by side as best I can. This build was completed in November of 2023 and is the result of hundreds of requests for this size bed frame. As I show in the video, and as always, please be careful when building and build these floating bed frames at your own risk, especially this twin size. I show in the video that the version I built does tip from side to side, but I also included dimensions that will make the base you build wider and hopefully more stable. I believe that this bed frame will be stable once a mattress and box spring are placed on there. I'm going to go ahead and recommend that you *don't* walk on the frame once it is assembled. Please feel free to reach out with any questions you may have and I'd love to hear your comments and feedback. Leave me a comment down below or reach me on instagram and I'll get back with you just as soon as I can. I can't thank you enough for your continued support on this channel.

    Great video. I noticed @5:36 you placed bricks under the frame for support. If my yard is level, can I place the frame directly on the grass, or would I still need to place bricks under the frame?

    • @CurtisMadeIt
      @CurtisMadeIt 3 години тому

      @israelholi7597 Hey Israel, either way is fine, the bricks are to help it sit level. Pressure treated/ground contact lumber should give you at least 10 years before it needs to be replaced, depending on how much moisture the deck you are building is subject to. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions at all my friend. Thanks for stopping by and talking with me 🤝

    • @CurtisMadeIt
      @CurtisMadeIt 4 дні тому

      @michaelpelegrin8970 Hey, good morning Michael, thanks for stopping by. To support your mattress, you are either going to need plywood with holes drilled in it or cedar fence pickets spaced slightly apart. The holes or spacing allows the mattress to ‘breathe’…this issue(mattress being able to breathe) was brought up to me by a viewer and not something I had previously considered, but it does seem to make sense and feels right so this is what I recommend in the absence of a box spring. I hope this helps. You have any other questions? Thanks for your time and support here, I mean it 🤝

      @MelissaHuyck-js8td Hey Melissa, good morning, thanks so much...Houston, Texas here. I don't really know how to start to reply to such high praise. You are the real hero. I accidentally became a UA-cam creator in October of 2019 when I posted the queen size version of this floating bed frame. That video really took off much more so than I ever could have anticipated so I kept making videos. This king size was after I had been producing videos for quite a little while and I kind of had an idea of how I wanted to present the items I was making. I'm certain you can see the evolution of my video editing if you watch from oldest to newest. Now I'm here! I try to be quick, funny, useful, and informative in a not over produced video to get the point across quickly but effectively. No one has time these days to watch a ~15-20 minute video. We want to be able to see how to do this thing that I want to pretty quickly and be able to ask the creator questions if I need to. That's what we do here on this channel...run 100% by me. I'll be launching a website here before too long too. I can't thank you enough for your most enthusiastic support and encouragement. Thank you, thank you 🤝

    Made 4 of these and found they were not too easy to balance - especially when not full. So I changed the length to 300 mm & the thickness to 45 mm. A 40 mm hole is drilled 190 mm from the bottom. Both ends are cut at a 33 dgree angle. They are rock-solid - even with an empty bottle!

I'll definitely be giving your method a shot and I'll come back to let you know how they turned out. I'm pretty excited and optimistic to try these again now! I gave one of my first attempts (25-30 mm thick) to a friend's wife, and she commented that she found it difficult to balance. That's when I went back to the "drawing board." 😃 Maybe someone will even improve on that. Have a great day. p.s. My pine wood shows some beautiful knots which really add to beauty of the bottle holder.

    Wanting to build this bed frame this summer as a father and son project. I'm in between which size of to use for the base 2x8 or 2x10. Cause the top of my mattress seats at 24 inches from the ground. Now, the question i have is for the top frame. What would be the meausment with a 45 degree miter cut for the top frame. But would like the mattress to sit inside of the top frame.

    • @CurtisMadeIt
      @CurtisMadeIt 8 днів тому

      @gflores076 Hey, good morning G...my many apologies for the delay here, life has been busy but I do have a useful answer for you I hope. 2x8 or 2x10 for the base is okay, whichever you prefer(Ask yourself: 1 are you going to be using this space for storage and 2 how sensitive to the overall height of the deck of the mattress are you going to be once everything is put together?). Keep in mind that you need a box spring to support the mattress so this may add additional height to your set up. Plywood with holes drilled in it or cedar fence pickets spaced slightly apart to allow the mattress to 'breathe' is moderately acceptable if you need to do that instead. As far as the frame goes, if you are going to miter your corners of the perimeter boards, I think you just add three inches to all of your cuts...this is twice the width of the 2x6's you will be using to make the frame. So...what is this, the king size? 76w x 80l. I'd cut that foot board to 79 and the side boards to 83...joists will be 76(the same width as the mattress). Are you planning on adding a headboard? I've got a separate video posted on this channel "king size headboard" to give you an idea if you think you may want to give it a shot. Let me know what other questions you have and I'll try to be a lot more handy to reply. Thanks for your time and support here, I mean it 🤝

      @uhmanoamusicdepartment6130 Hey Honuhonuhi, I'd recommend modifying the measurements for the base and the frame if you are going for a cali-king size. That mattress has slightly different measurements than this king size and you want your base to be adequately sized, placed, and oriented so as to provide the most support for your frame/box spring/mattress/headboard(if desired). I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions my friend. Thanks for your time and support here 🤝

    • @CurtisMadeIt
      @CurtisMadeIt 22 дні тому

      @danacoric5657 Hey Dana, thanks for stopping by my friend. I used untreated lumber for all of the floating bed frame videos posted on this channel...that's generally what I use for indoor furniture builds. The pieces in this video are American 2x6's that actually measure 1.5" x 5.5", that's 3.81cm x 13.97cm. If you want to make your base taller, you can use a different width board, add a headboard if you want to(separate video posted on this channel), or otherwise modify it as desired. This video really just gives you an idea of how to make one for yourself. I hope this helps. Do you have any other questions? Thanks for your time and support here, I mean it 🤝

    • @CurtisMadeIt
      @CurtisMadeIt Місяць тому

      @user-cg9oy4es8v Hey, good morning Timothy, thanks for stopping by. I left the disassembly and moving part out so that you would come by here and talk to me today. Actually, I didn’t really think that far ahead. No way I could have *ever* imagined, anticipated, or hoped for these floating bed frame videos to get millions of views like they have(3.6MM 05.25.2024). At the time of this 3.0 build, I was trying to save money and clear up some space in my tiny apartment by using materials I already had on hand. When I move, I personally will completely disassemble this bed frame and keep all the pieces. When I get to where I’m going, I’ll cannibalize this 3.0 in to a final version for myself. I’ve learned that these videos act as a good basis to start from…not everyone builds them exactly as they are shown here. I’d recommend a 2x8 for the base in this case instead of building it as it is in the video(2x6 and 2x4 laying flat stacked on top). Take the time to label every single component and orientation in an area that won’t be shown when the frame is assembled so when you do move, you can either break it down all the way or just in to three large components(base assembly, frame assembly, and the headboard{you are gonna need 4 pretty strong hands to move these three pieces}). Make sure to hit the same holes when you re-assemble. I appreciate your time and support here, thank you for your great question. Apologies for the length but I hope this helps. I’m here if you need anything else my friend 🤝

    Hi! I am trying o get the correct dimensions and size boards I need to make a sturdy platform for inside my king bed frame. The box springs are total crap and the lack of support on this old bed is ruining my back (lol). So, my vision is to build a simple wood platform and assemble it inside my bed frame, then use the platform vs boxspring. Can you simplify this for me, with dimensions and size boards I will need? I hope my description makes sense...

    • @CurtisMadeIt
      @CurtisMadeIt Місяць тому

      @katiepatterson5407 Hey Katie, good evening! I think I'm picking up what you are throwing down here. So, first of all, if you are going to build this bed frame, I'm going to highly recommend you get a new box spring. I think that's probably the best way overall to support your mattress. In the absence of a box spring, you can use either plywood with holes drilled in it or cedar fence pickets spaced slightly apart to allow the mattress to breathe. Someone pointed the aeration aspect of the mattress out to me some time back and I haven't heard anything bad about people *not* using a box spring and instead using the plywood/fence pickets, I still highly recommend the box spring. If you still want to build this bed frame and not use a box spring, you can build it as it is shown in the video and plywood/picket the deck for support. If you want or need help modifying this build to better suit your needs or your vision, I'm happy to help with that as well. Feel free to reach me any time on instagram Curtis_made_it. Hey I have a quick question. I’m building this right now however my only problem is I don’t see that you made an indentation for the bed to sit in this video. Usually bed frames are offset so the bed sits in it flush. Right now it’s just sitting on top of the wood. Answering would be appreciated!

    • @CurtisMadeIt
      @CurtisMadeIt Місяць тому

      @alial-mehdi2258 Hey Ali, good morning. This is correct. You need a box spring on top of the frame to support the mattress. The edge of the box spring and the mattress are flush with the outside of the frame. I hope this helps.

    • @alial-mehdi2258
      @alial-mehdi2258 Місяць тому

      @@CurtisMadeIt not quite, thank you for answering quickly! I understand a box spring should go in there as well and then the bed on top of it, However my question was when you made the horizontal studs ( that the box spring sits on top of ) they are at the same height as the exterior bed frame so when I go to put the boxspring there’s no indentation in the wood for it to sit in and then the bed frame on top. Do you get what I’m saying?

    • @CurtisMadeIt
      @CurtisMadeIt Місяць тому

      @alial-mehdi2258 Absolutely, totally understand what you are saying. This is how I built this bed frame originally for the queen size. It was popular enough(1.5MM views 05.15.2024) that I copied it and made the different sizes for UA-cam, even though I don’t own those size mattresses. Even if you were to drop the joists down, the box spring would still sit on the perimeter of the frame. If you want it to sit down in there, you need to adjust your measurements. How about now, you get what I’m saying…?

    • @alial-mehdi2258
      @alial-mehdi2258 Місяць тому

      @@CurtisMadeIt ah yes I get it. This is my first time building something like this so I was under the impression the box spring should sit inside the frame ( because that’s how I’ve had every bed frame I bought) so what your saying is I either have to adjust the measurements of the joists so the box spring sits inside the frame or let it just sit on top of the frame and then put the bed on top of that.

    • @CurtisMadeIt
      @CurtisMadeIt Місяць тому

      @alial-mehdi2258 No worries my friend, I'm here to help you as best I can. As always, I recommend a box spring with this style bed frame. Once you get the frame built, you put the box spring on there. *Then* you can put the mattress on there. The sides and foot of the frame, box spring, and mattress will all be flush once you get done building. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions at all my friend. We'll talk again soon 🤝

    Hi Curtis, love this and the Queen bed frame! If you were moving to a new house, would you break the frame down all the way, partly or keep entact?

    • @CurtisMadeIt
      @CurtisMadeIt Місяць тому

      @JJ81_Studios Hey JJ, ooofff. This is a great question, thank you. So...I took the time to label all of the components in the queen 3.0 build so I know the placement and orientation of all of the pieces. I think to be honest, when I move, I'm going to break it down all the way(get to where I'm going and cannibalize all of the 3.0 in a complete re-design and build now that I know as much as I do{especially after having helped so many of you guys modify your builds}). I think I had originally planned to keep it in three components (base, frame, and headboard), but when I built that 3.0, I wasn't looking to spend a lot of money and wanted to use some stock I had on hand to free up some space in my tiny apartment. You can see it's not entirely the best design as displayed in the video. I'll modify that 3.0 to be very much the same, but quite a little bit different, to what will hopefully be the last version of that queen that I need to build. Man, I'm telling you, I've built and re-built that thing many times now 🤦‍♂️ . Apologies for the lengthy reply, but I very much appreciated this one. I hope you are having a good weekend. Thanks for your time and support here, I mean it 🤝

    • @JJ81_Studios
      @JJ81_Studios Місяць тому

      @@CurtisMadeIt excellent reply, I was not expecting that, thank you. I guess a follow up, when you break it down and putting back together again, are you using the same screw holes? I'm worried that if I have to break it down, the screw holes will not be as strong as first used and putting more holes around the previous would look terrible. Or am I over thinking this? PS, I'm closing on a house at the end of this month and I want to build my own furniture as much as possible and these are some of the questions I'm coming up with as I research more and more. PSS, big dominos is on the list :)

    • @CurtisMadeIt
      @CurtisMadeIt Місяць тому

      @JJ81_Studios 🫡 I would attempt to use the same screw holes, yes. If you are worried about compromising the strength of the holes from repeated assembly and disassembly, you can pretty easily put you some glue in those holes...get you a couple of toothpicks covered in glue...and smash those toothpicks in to the hole. Once the glue dries, you can knock off the excess and get back to assembling...this is just one way to reset your hole. You can also drill it out with a 1/4" in drill bit and use a 1/4" dowel with glue to fill in the void. You will want to pre-drill the holes for your screws as you should have the first time. I'd try pretty hard not to put extra holes anywhere they aren't needed. I wish you all the success possible in your furniture building quest. It's a rewarding skill, you will find out pretty soon if you haven't already. I'm here if you have any other questions in regards to this or any other builds you are attempting. Take care my friend.

      @CurtisMadeIt Місяць тому

      @isabellasanchez8034 Hey Isabella, good morning and thank you for your continued support, you are the real hero here! It's gonna depend on your situation...how you want your bed frame to look and function, but I'm personally more comfortable with the King size FBF video version...that's the other video. I modified it to add a headboard(video posted on this channel) and I thought that was pretty cool so if you've got the time/effort/energy to do so, the headboard really gives you a very large sense of accomplishment when you get it done. Use "L" shaped corner brackets to secure the base to the frame. Use all untreated lumber...I use 2x6's for the base and frame but the base can be 2x8/2x10/2x12 to allow for more storage area if you want or need...use 3" screws at the wood junctions. Use a black fitted sheet to cover the wood instead of painting or staining it...this is the fastest, easiest, and most cost effecient way to cover the frame if you don't want to see the wood...this will really make the lights pop and enhance the 'floating' effect. Pre-drill all your holes to keep your wood from splitting while you are driving your screws. Hopefully some of this helps...feel free to ask any other questions you may have or reach me on instagram Curtis_made_it and I'll be available to help as needed. I really appreciate your time, interest in, and support on this channel, I mean it 🤝 I hope you have a great day and a safe build when you get there. Talk again soon.
